History and Handcraft at Tumut Brooms
If history and handcraft makes your soul smile, a visit to the Tumut Broom Factory– the last original Millet Broom Factory in Australia should be on your list.
This local, family-owned business has been in operation since it opened in 1946 as the ‘Tumut Rural Co-operative Millet Society’. The beautiful, sturdy, hardworking and long-lasting brooms are still manufactured by hand, using millet sourced locally.
See how the millet, once dried and prepared, is bound, sewn, trimmed, and the brooms packaged for sale, and, take home what has been (rightly) described as the “best broom I have ever used…the best for cleaning rugs!”
Visit the factory on Adelong Road in Tumut, immerse yourself in the history of this gentle craft and say hello to the sons of the original owner, Geoff and Robert Richards.
